IF YOU FLY TO TULSA

Consider landing at Richard Lloyd Jones, Jr. airport. On the aviation radio frequencies, the airport is called ‘Riverside’ (RVS). Immediately east of the Arkansas River (thus the airport name, Riverside!) is the world famous Oral Roberts University, and Oklahoma’s best visual landmark for pilots. Other universities reside here, but the reasons to come to Tulsa are far-reaching, well beyond our world-class educational institutions. Tulsa has many events, like Oral Roberts University’s famous ‘Word Explosion’ a world class Oktoberfest, an outstanding Mayfest, a highly worthwhile Juneteenth, the hard-to-beat PGA every six years, and many more too numerous to mention. Tulsa’s myriad facilities attract many people, who want to see Tulsa’s Philbrook or Gilcrease museums among others, Tulsa’s magnificent park systems including the Oxley nature center and more. There are plenty of reasons to fly to Tulsa.

And when you land at Riverside, the best place to refuel and refresh is Christiansen Aviation Inc.’s unmistakable Jet Center. This modern, family-owned Fixed Base Operator (FBO) offers competitively priced fuel, tiedown, hangar, weather computer services, a comfortable and efficient flight planning room and more. Pilots and passengers alike regularly enjoy Christiansen Jet Center’s catering service, car rental, snooze room, showers, lounge, high speed internet and will soon also enjoy wireless internet connection capabilities. For those staying overnight or longer, Christiansen Jet Center coordinates hotel accommodations in addition to all the services already mentioned.

If this sounds like a large operation, in at least one realm, it is. Christiansen Aviation services about 150 transient aircraft per month. An appreciable percentage of these are business jets of every stripe, and from all over the map. One of aviation’s most prestigious periodicals, the Aviation International News, which boasts roughly 40,000 subscribers in 172 nations, placed Christiansen Jet Center 27th out of all entries for its 2003 rating of Fixed Base Operators. The pilots contributing to this survey are serious about their travel. Costs must be reasonable, services impeccable, reliability excellent, and the amenities suitable for their top-level passengers. Competition for such an honor is stiff. Hopefuls cannot bluff their way through the selection, for consistency wins in these contests.

Those of us left unimpressed by ultra-huge, impersonal ‘steel-and-glass’ businesses find an open, friendly air at the Jet Center. While Christiansen Aviation handles business airplanes as large as the Grumman G-V or the Global Express, still every bit as welcome are tiny taildraggers like Champs and Cubs. Founder Bill Christiansen has instilled in his sons Ken and Bryan an appreciation of aviation and aviators that a transient can feel within minutes of walking through the door. The sign says ‘Jet Center,’ and to the Christiansen family and their employees, every customer is that important. Fresh cookies, fresh tea, fresh coffee, popcorn, cold water, snacks, and personal, highly competent service . . . all of these await you at Tulsa’s Riverside airport.
